Policy Analysis Reflection
My policy analysis paper topic was about tackling food insecurity and childhood obesity though establishing food literacy with school gardens. The reason I chose this topic was because I worked with children in school gardens and saw the differences in their attitudes and knowledge on food after they toured and participated in garden activities. The need for access to food in the low-income area I live in made me want to research the benefit school gardens have, if any, on food literacy, providing access to food, and improving the health of children in low-income areas. After doing research I definitely want to advocate for the implementation of more school gardens. Working on this project made me work better on my time management and writing skills to meet deadlines and present an eloquent paper. Researching policies and overcoming difficulties on finding polices showed me the importance of persistence and not giving up. Researching policies made me learn that it is very difficult to get policies passed, especially if they are not covering a topic that interests both parties. This project also made me come out of my shell and talk to people who would be able to help me on my project such as librarians and stakeholders. Interviewing stakeholders was my favorite part of this project because it made me go out and identify people who can effectively contribute my research project. Interviewing stakeholders is a skill I will contribute to my professional career because being able to work with people and organization will be an important aspect of environmental education.
