Taking Research Methods for Environmental Studies class allowed me to participate and contribute to research.
One of the research projects I was able to contribute work on was the Living Communities Challenge which partnered with California State University Monterey Bay and Brightworks Sustainability. Their partnership developed a biophilic design framework and charrette to explore potential opportunities for how the campus can operate as if people and nature are connected. As stakeholders in the campus and its future, my peers and I contributed to background documents that help facilitators and the campus charrette to consider biophilic design in the context of CSUMB.

A second research project I was able to contribute work to was a preliminary report submitted to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and the North Monterey County High School. The report summarizes findings from a survey designed to gauge the environmental literacy of students over time. My peers and I analyzed the answers North Monterey County High School students gave on the survey and created constructs from the analysis which were: school attitude, nature attitudes, nature connection, knowledge, belief in action, and pro-environmental behavior.

Below is a link to a story map I created on ESRI for the Research Methods class. The ESRI storymap maps out the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. It details the land use and the growing infrastructure, a growing population, and the effects both of these issues have had on the pollution in the city. It also shows the solutions the city of Guadalajara plans on implementing to offset or lower their emissions.
In the fall of 2018, I was able to complete 30 hours of service learning with an organization called Regeneracion Pajaro Valley Climate Action Group. Serving with them allowed me to co-write a policy paper and fact sheet with Dr.Victoria Derr, Caitlyn Barrera, and Nancy Faulstich. The paper looked into the effects climate change is having and will continue to have on farmworkers in the Pajaro Valley. It also addressed some of the actions that can be taken to lessen the effects.
